Sixteen extraordinarily gifted students wake up locked inside a school, and a sadistic robot bear tells them there is only one way out: kill a classmate and get away with it. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony puts a fresh cast through that nightmare at the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles, opening with Kaede Akamatsu, the Ultimate Pianist, and the quietly observant Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detective. Spike Chunsoft and series creator Kazutaka Kodaka built it as a fresh start for the series, so new players can begin here, but returning fans will find it plays with their expectations at every turn.
Every chapter follows a gripping rhythm. Days of uneasy routine and getting to know the cast give way to a body discovery, then a frantic investigation where you comb the crime scene for evidence, and finally the Class Trial, where the survivors argue their way to the culprit. The trials are where V3 innovates most. You can now lie during Nonstop Debates, using false evidence to steer the conversation where you need it, and Debate Scrums split the class into two sides shouting each other down. Argument Armament and a revamped Hangman's Gambit add rhythm and puzzle twists, and Monokuma is joined this time by his chaotic Monokub children.
The cast is the series' most unpredictable yet. Kokichi Oma, the self-proclaimed Ultimate Supreme Leader, lies so freely that every line he says becomes a puzzle, and the rest of the class, from a robot to a cosplayer to an aspiring magician, are written so that you never know who to trust. Rui Komatsuzaki's character art and the series' signature pink blood give it a style no other mystery game shares, and Masafumi Takada's pulsing score makes every trial feel like a showdown.
Its final act is still debated by fans years later, which says everything about how boldly it was written. Released in the West in 2017 on PS4 and Vita as the third numbered entry, V3 found a natural home on the Vita for a series that made its name on Sony's handhelds, where the investigations and trials feel like a thriller paperback you cannot put down.
Welcome to a new world of Danganronpa, and prepare yourself for the biggest, most exhilarating episode yet. Set in a “psycho-cool” environment, a new cast of 16 characters find themselves kidnapped and imprisoned in a school. Inside, some will kill, some will die, and some will be punished. Reimagine what you thought high-stakes, fast-paced investigation was as you investigate twisted murder cases and condemn your new friends to death.
