Item Description

Picture stomping out The B-52's "Rock Lobster," Devo's "Whip It" and Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" back to back on a dance pad. Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 3, Konami's third Ultramix built for the original Xbox, mixes those Western favorites with tracks like Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?" and The Black Eyed Peas' "Hey Mama" alongside the J-pop, Eurobeat and electronic songs that DDR players know by heart.

The mode list is huge. Quest Mode sends you on a tour across North America to become the best dancer around, building a fanbase as you go. Party players get Quad Mode for four dance pads at once, plus Attack Mode, where five-arrow combos launch effects at your opponent, Bomb Mode's hot-potato chaos and Sync Mode, where everyone has to hit every arrow together or the song ends. Workout Mode tracks your steps with a calorie counter, a ten-level Challenge Mode sets specific goals, Training Mode slows songs down for practice, and Freestyle lets newcomers dance without following arrows at all.

Difficulties run from beginner charts up to Heavy, with Oni-level challenges on some songs for veterans, and Edit Mode lets you build your own step charts. When it launched in 2005, Xbox Live pushed the concept further than most rhythm games of its day, connecting players online, offering downloadable song packs and letting dancers swap custom steps. Critics responded well, and it earned generally favorable reviews.

It is a game designed around the dance pad and the living room, and it shines brightest when a group of friends is taking turns or crowding four pads into one room. For a DDR fan, Ultramix 3 is a deep, generous entry with a soundtrack unlike any other in the series.
