Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Grieg, Fauré and Brahms's Fourth Symphony are not what most people expect to hear from a Sega Genesis, but Crystal's Pony Tale was never a typical Genesis game. Composer Mark Mitchell wove those classical pieces together with his own original music to score a gentle storybook adventure, and the result gives the cartridge a calm, almost music-box quality that sets it apart from nearly everything else on the console.
The Storm Witch has imprisoned Crystal Pony's friends in her castle so she can rule Ponyland, and it falls to Crystal to collect the crystals that will free them. Seven areas, each with its own secrets, can be explored in any order, with teleportation pictures to hop between locations. Horseshoes gathered along the way are "paid" at gates to open new areas, and Crystal cannot die: an enemy's touch costs her a horseshoe instead of a life. She hops obstacles automatically, though a button lets players jump on their own, and talking to characters or interacting with objects turns up extra items. The only true battles are against the Storm Witch herself, triggered each time a crystal is used in the right place, and three difficulty levels let the challenge grow with the player.
Developed by Artech and released by Sega in 1994, it was created in the hope of attracting young girls to the platform at a time when the Genesis was marketed hard toward edgy action fans. That makes it a fascinating piece of Sega history. Some critics even complained that it used too much pink in its graphics, which today reads more like a mark of how deliberately different it set out to be.
For a younger player getting a first taste of retro hardware, it is an ideal fit, with no lives to lose and plenty to discover. For Genesis collectors, it is a soft-spoken oddity in a library famous for its attitude, and a reminder that Sega's 16-bit catalog was wider than its reputation.
You navigate your pony through various locations, collecting horseshoes on your way and "paying" them at level gates to pass to another location. You can explore the locations in any order you wish, traveling directly between them or using teleportation pictures. The game has more adventure than action elements. Crystal Pony cannot die in the game; if an enemy hits her, she merely loses one of her horseshoes. The only battles are against the witch, occurring every time you use a gem at the correct place. The pony would automatically jump over obstacles, but you can also make her jump with a corresponding button. You can get extra items by interacting with various objects and characters, pressing the action button.
