Item Description

Corona's fourteenth birthday should be a celebration. Instead it is the day he takes up his late father's sword and shield and is sent out, by law of the king, to hunt the creatures that threaten humanity. It sounds like the setup for a straightforward fantasy quest, and for a while Crusader of Centy plays along. Then the story pulls the rug out: Corona loses the ability to speak with other people and can only talk to animals and plants, and the world starts to look very different from the one he was raised to defend.

That twist powers the game's best idea. As Corona befriends animals, they join him and lend their abilities while equipped, and he can equip two at a time. Mac the dog pins enemies in place, while Chilly the penguin adds an ice attack to his sword, and the menagerie keeps growing as the adventure goes on. Pairing the right companions opens blocked paths and cracks tough enemies, giving the overhead sword combat a puzzle-solving layer of its own.

Critics at the time could not resist comparing it to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and the resemblance is real: the overhead view, the sword-and-exploration loop, the steady drip of new abilities that reopen old areas. Crusader of Centy has a mood of its own, though. After Corona confronts the dragon Maldra, the journey reaches through time as he tries to learn why monsters and humans went to war in the first place, and the answer gives the game a thoughtful, bittersweet streak that sets it apart from its Nintendo inspiration. It was made by Nextech, a studio staffed largely by former Wolf Team developers, and brought to North America by Atlus.

Genesis owners never got a Zelda of their own, which is exactly why this cartridge has gathered such a devoted cult following. It was the Genesis answer to a genre Nintendo owned, and it holds its ground with bright overhead art, quick combat and a story with more on its mind than rescuing a princess. The game resurfaced on Nintendo Switch Online in 2023, but the Genesis cartridge is the original way to meet Corona and his animal friends, and to feel the quiet shock of that midgame turn the way players first did.

About the game

Millions of years ago, heinous creatures that lurked in the shadows and darkness that blanketed the planet inhabited the Earth. When light finally broke through, only a few beasts were able to survive by burrowing into deep caverns. Over time, they multiplied, evolved, and patiently waited for the right time to emerge and rule the Earth once again. You are Corona, and you've just celebrated your 14th birthday. By law of the king, you must now go seek out these creatures of the dark and destroy them. As you travel in search of your destiny, you'll make animal allies that will prove invaluable on your quest. Each level will offer mind-bending puzzles and challenges that will help you get one step closer to completing your mission.
