Item Description

Cruis'n USA has no interest in racing lines or tire wear. It wants you flooring it out of San Francisco, weaving through oncoming traffic and road construction, and tearing coast to coast through California, Arizona, the Grand Canyon, Iowa, Chicago, Indiana and Appalachia before the finish in Washington, D.C. Checkpoints add precious seconds to the clock, first place is the only way to move on, and a dedicated music button lets you flip through the soundtrack mid-race like punching buttons on a car radio.

Its history is a slice of Nintendo 64 lore. Eugene Jarvis, the designer behind Defender and Robotron: 2084, led the arcade original, which Midway and Nintendo promoted in 1994 as one of the first games on "Ultra 64" hardware, the same name Nintendo was using for its upcoming console. It was a big arcade hit. The home port, from Williams Entertainment's San Diego studio, was slated as an N64 launch game until Nintendo sent it back for more work, and a few arcade gags, including running over animals and a presidential hot tub scene, were cut along the way.

The garage is pure 90s arcade fantasy, with stand-ins for a '63 Corvette, a Ferrari 512 TR and a 1940 Ford hot rod called "La Bomba," plus hidden rides like a police cruiser and a school bus. Critics were hard on the N64 version's frame rate and collision detection, but IGN and Electronic Gaming Monthly both called the split-screen two-player mode its highlight, and players bought it anyway: it sold more than a million copies by the end of 1997.

That success is why the Player's Choice edition exists, since Nintendo used the label to reissue its biggest sellers at a lower price. This is the game that launched the Cruis'n series, a loud, goofy and gloriously 1996 way to spend an afternoon racing a friend across America.
