Item Description

Before Cloud Strife ever stepped off a train in Midgar, there was Zack Fair, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII tells his story with the kind of passion and heartbreak only the Final Fantasy VII universe can summon. Released on the PSP in 2007 in Japan and 2008 in North America, this action RPG is the prequel that fills in the years before the original game: Shinra's grip on the world, the elite ranks of SOLDIER, the defection of Genesis and the fateful events at Nibelheim that shaped Cloud's entire journey. If you have ever wanted to understand the full emotional weight of Final Fantasy VII, this is where that understanding begins.

The gameplay trades the turn-based roots of classic Final Fantasy for real-time combat that feels urgent and kinetic, perfect for a hero defined by drive and optimism. Zack's sword work is fluid, and the Digital Mind Wave, a slot-machine reel that spins in the corner of the screen, governs Limit Breaks, summons and level-ups in a way that keeps every battle a little unpredictable. Materia returns in familiar form, now with a fusion system for crafting stronger combinations, and hundreds of optional missions give completionists plenty to chase between story chapters.

What makes Crisis Core special is its storytelling. Director Hajime Tabata's team walks the line between grand mythological tragedy and intimate character study: Zack's friendship with Cloud, his reverence for his mentor Angeal, his romance with Aerith and his confrontations with Sephiroth all land with real force. Takeharu Ishimoto's rock-charged score and Ayaka's theme song "Why" frame a story that builds toward an ending every Final Fantasy VII fan knows is coming, and it still hits like a gut punch.

Visually it pushed the PSP hard, with rich CG cutscenes, voice acting and a 16:9 widescreen presentation that showed what the handheld could do. Of all the entries in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core is the most focused and emotionally coherent, which is why Square Enix remastered it in 2022 as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Playing the original on PSP is how Zack's story first arrived, on the hardware it was built for.
