"Hey hey hey, it's time to make some crazy money!" Few games have ever hit as hard in their first ten seconds as Crazy Taxi. The Offspring kicks in, the clock starts ticking, and you are flooring a convertible cab through a sun-drenched coastal city, cutting across lawns, launching off hills and threading oncoming traffic to get a fare to their stop before they lose patience.

The genius is in how simple it is. Every customer has a destination and a timer, and every second you shave off earns you more time on the clock, so a good run becomes a chain of near misses and shortcuts you discover yourself. Drift around corners, hop into a burst of speed and string together Crazy Combos while the passenger shouts encouragement or abuse from the back seat. Four cabbies, Axel, B.D. Joe, Gena and Gus, each bring their own car and attitude, and the city is packed with real-world stops of the era, from fast-food restaurants to record stores.

The Dreamcast version adds plenty beyond the arcade original. Alongside the arcade city there is a second, all-new map built for home play, and the Crazy Box challenges turn the driving techniques into bite-sized tests, from bowling with your cab to popping balloons, that teach you the advanced moves the high scores depend on. With a soundtrack from The Offspring and Bad Religion, it captured the late-nineties punk-rock attitude better than almost anything else in games.

Crazy Taxi became one of the Dreamcast's signature hits, which is why it was reissued in Sega's All Stars line of best-selling games, and it went on to spawn sequels and countless ports. Nothing has quite matched the original's bright, breathless energy, and on the hardware it was built for, it plays as fast and loose as ever.
