Item Description

Doctor Neo Cortex has finally built a weapon worthy of Crash: another bandicoot. In The Wrath of Cortex, the villain and his master Uka Uka awaken the Elementals, four ancient masks with power over earth, water, fire and air, and pour their strength into Crunch Bandicoot, a hulking super-soldier built to finish Crash for good.

The structure will feel familiar to anyone who grew up on the PlayStation trilogy. Crash and his sister Coco work through a hub of themed warp rooms, this time a virtual-reality system Coco built to track down 25 crystals, smashing crates, hunting gems and spinning through tight, linear 3D stages. Each boss fight pits you against Crunch charged up by one of the masks, Rok-Ko, Wa-Wa, Py-Ro and Lo-Lo, with Aku Aku in Crash's corner as always.

Where Wrath of Cortex stretches out is variety. Brand-new vehicles join the series: a see-through hamster ball Crash rolls through obstacle courses, a submarine for the underwater stages and a lumbering mech, alongside returning favorites like the jeep, the jet-pack and Crash's plane. Vehicles can even turn up partway through ordinary platforming levels, and Coco is fully playable on her own stages, so the pacing keeps shifting between precision jumping and something stranger.

This was the first mainline Crash adventure made without Naughty Dog, built by Traveller's Tales, and his first game on multiple platforms, which also made it Crash's Xbox debut. The Xbox release isn't a straight copy of the PlayStation 2 original: it loads faster and adds a fur effect that gives Crash and friends an almost plush-toy look. Reviews were more mixed than for the PlayStation classics, but it's the bridge between the original trilogy and Crash's multiplatform era, and a bright, breezy platformer for anyone collecting the series across consoles.

About the game

Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is the fourth mainline series game and the first to feature Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation 2. It was later ported to the GameCube and Xbox, making it his first multiplatform appearance. The player controls Crash and his younger sister Coco who must gather 25 crystals and defeat the main antagonists of the story, Doctor Neo Cortex and his new super weapon Crunch Bandicoot. Much of the game takes place in a Virtual Reality Hub System created by Coco to help Crash gather the crystals. The gameplay is similar to the older games of the series.
