Item Description

There's something irresistibly funny about the premise of Crackpots. Bugs have come pouring out of the sewer and are chewing through the buildings of Brooklyn, and the only thing standing between them and Potsy's apartment house is Potsy himself, a rooftop gardener armed with nothing but flower pots. You run along the edge of the roof and drop pots on the insects as they climb toward the building's open windows.

The fun is in reading the bugs. Different-colored bugs climb in different patterns, some heading straight up while others weave or cut across toward the windows, so every drop has to be timed and aimed for a different kind of movement. Let too many slip inside and they start eating away the building beneath you, which keeps the pressure on the longer you hold out, and each new level comes at you faster.

Crackpots was Dan Kitchen's first game for Activision, and his brother Garry, the programmer of Coleco's 2600 Donkey Kong, helped him learn the hardware. It has Activision's trademark polish, with crisp, colorful graphics and smooth animation, but it arrived in 1983 just as the video game market was collapsing, which helps explain why it never became as widely known as Pitfall! or Kaboom!.

For 2600 fans, that makes it a rewarding discovery: a sharp, playful game from Activision's best years that still feels fresh because it slipped under so many players' radar the first time around.
