Item Description

Cosmic Creeps feels like two arcade ideas spliced together by someone who loved both. Your home planet is decaying and dropping out of orbit, and it is up to you to get its children to safety. First you guide an Orbinaut upward through drifting space debris and Skeeters, streaks of fire that cut horizontally across your path, in a Frogger-style climb toward the hovering rescue ship. Your dying planet keeps sinking, so the clock is always ticking.

Reach the ship and the game flips into its second half, which plays almost like an upside-down Centipede. Now you slide the ship side to side, firing down at the Cosmic Creeps as they chase the Cosmic Kids fleeing from the bottom corner toward a safety zone at the top of the screen. Your lasers can hit the Kids too, so every shot is a judgment call. Each rescued Kid is worth 1,500 points against just 100 for a downed enemy, and reaching 5,000 points sends you on to a faster, nastier level.

It came from Telesys, one of the small third-party publishers of the early 1980s, also remembered for Fast Food and Coco Nuts, and it has the offbeat personality those companies were known for. Its two halves feed into each other beautifully and the difficulty ramps up just fast enough to keep you hooked, which makes it a rewarding find on the quirkier third-party side of the 2600 library.

About the game

Your home planet is decaying. In order to survive you must evacuate the Space Kids from their dying planet. During the first section the player has to navigate a kid from the bottom of the screen to the safety of the hoverivng space ship at the top of the screen. In doing so he has to dodge several obstacles like plasma or hostile skeeters. After having reached the space ship the player takes control of the ship. While other kids are hunted by skeeters in their attempt to reach the space ship the player tries to protect them in shooting at the skeeters who are pursuing the fleeing kids. Every killed skeeter amounts to 100 points - every saved kid adds another 1500 points to the score. After getting 5000 points the game proceeds to the next more difficult level.
