Item Description

Conker the squirrel started out as one of Rare's cute mascots, and then he discovered hangovers, cash and toilet humor. Conker: Live & Reloaded brings the 2001 Nintendo 64 cult hit Conker's Bad Fur Day to the original Xbox, rebuilt by Rare with dramatically richer visuals, and pairs it with a completely new team-based multiplayer game.

The story mode is the same gloriously filthy adventure. Conker stumbles out of a night at the pub, gets hopelessly lost, and blunders through a world of parodies and set pieces: the opera-singing Great Mighty Poo, a war chapter lampooning the beach landing from Saving Private Ryan, a bank heist lifted straight out of The Matrix, and a final showdown with the Panther King's forces. Under the gags sits a clever 3D platformer whose context-sensitive pads hand Conker whatever tool a scene calls for, and the writing still lands harder than most comedy games manage. Some of the original's language is more heavily bleeped this time, a change fans have argued about ever since.

The multiplayer half is where Live & Reloaded becomes its own game. Rare reimagined the modes as class-based team warfare, with six combat specialists to choose from and multi-mission campaigns split between the Old War and the Future War, pitting the Squirrel army against the Tediz. It was built around Xbox Live and System Link play, and although the Live service for original Xbox games is long gone, it's a fascinating snapshot of how far Rare pushed online shooting on the console.

Rare and Microsoft Game Studios released it in 2005, and it is the only way to play Conker's Bad Fur Day on the original Xbox. The fur shading and lighting were showpieces for the hardware, and the M rating is earned many times over, which is exactly why Conker's single adventure has such a devoted following. It's crude, clever and unlike anything else Rare ever made.
