Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
A cartoonist hunched over his drawing board on a stormy night, a bolt of lightning, and suddenly Sketch Turner is trapped inside his own comic book while his villain, Mortus, escapes into the real world and starts drawing enemies onto the page to finish him off. Comix Zone is built on that wonderfully meta premise, and Sega Technical Institute commits to it in every frame. Each stage is laid out as a comic page, and Sketch fights his way from panel to panel, smashing through borders, leaping between frames and sometimes choosing which panel to enter next. Mortus's hand sketches new foes right in front of you, and speech balloons and big comic sound effects burst out of the action.
The combat is tougher than it looks. Sketch has a solid set of punches, kicks and combos, but nearly everything costs health, including punching through obstacles, so careless play drains his life bar fast. A small inventory adds a puzzle layer: a knife, sticks of dynamite, iced tea to restore health, and Roadkill, Sketch's pet rat, who can sniff out hidden items and slip into places Sketch cannot reach. In a pinch, Sketch can even tear a strip from the page and fold it into a paper airplane that sweeps across the screen. General Alissa Cyan keeps in contact as he tries to battle his way out before Mortus gets the last word.
Creator Peter Morawiec and the STI team packed the game with lavish hand-drawn art, and Howard Drossin's grungy, guitar-driven soundtrack captures mid-'90s attitude perfectly. Comix Zone arrived in 1995, late in the Genesis's life as attention shifted to the next generation of consoles, which is a big part of why it became a cult favorite rather than a household name.
It has been reissued many times since, but nothing beats the cartridge on the console Sega built it to push. Few games of the 16-bit era have such a clear, original idea, and fewer still execute it with this much style: playing Comix Zone feels like flipping through a comic that fights back.
Comix Zone is an action platformer in which players control Sketch Turner as he progresses through panels of his comic book, hoping to reach the end and escape before his own creations finish him off. But there is hope. Now that he’s a comic book superhero, Sketch can kick some serious butt.
