Item Description

For countless families, Combat was the first thing that ever appeared on the television after a new Atari Video Computer System came out of its box. Packed in with the original console, it introduced home players to the idea of sitting side by side with a friend and trying to blow each other up, and it remains one of the most important games in the entire 2600 library.

Combat is built for two players, and its 27 game variations cover a surprising amount of ground. The tank games pit two armored vehicles against each other across mazes and open fields, with options for guided missiles that curve as you steer, bouncing shots that ricochet off the walls in the "Tank-Pong" games, and invisible tanks that only reveal themselves when they fire or bump into something. Take to the air and the biplane and jet games trade walls for clouds, with variations that give each player several planes at once and one memorable setup where a squadron takes on a single giant bomber.

The game grew out of two black-and-white coin-op machines, Kee Games' Tank and Atari's Jet Fighter, and bringing that kind of head-to-head action home in color, with this much variety on a single cartridge, was a big statement for a brand-new console. Those chunky tanks rumbling across a colored field are among the most recognizable images from the dawn of home video games.

Its appeal hasn't changed since 1977: hand a friend the second joystick, pick a variation and see who blinks first. This is where the Atari 2600 story began, and the game nearly every original 2600 owner remembers playing.

About the game

Combat is an early video game by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600. It was based on two earlier black-and-white coin-operated arcade games produced by Atari. Combat had color graphics and numerous gameplay variations. The 27 game modes featured a variety of different combat scenarios, including tanks, biplanes, and jet fighters. The tank games had interesting options such as bouncing munitions ("Tank-Pong") and invisibility. The biplane and jet games also allowed for variation, such as multiple planes per player and an inventive game with a squadron of planes versus one giant bomber.
