Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. This copy also includes the box's insert tray. The label is clean, the manual is complete, and the box shows light shelf wear with its flaps intact. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
A speedboat with a cannon bolted to the bow, a river that never stops pulling you forward, and a new job every couple of minutes: Cobra Triangle never lets the water go calm. Rare built it for the NES in 1989, and like the studio's best work from that era it takes a simple idea, here a powerboat on an isometric river, and keeps finding new things to do with it across 25 stages.
One stage is a straight race against rival boats, threading between riverbanks and obstacles to beat the clock. The next sends you upstream, dodging floating logs and swirling whirlpools. Then the objectives turn strange in the best way. In the bomb stages you nudge four floating bombs, one at a time, to a detonation site. In the rescue stages rogue boats try to drag swimmers to the edge of the lake, and it is up to you to stop them before they get there. Ramps launch the boat into the air to clear hazards and crash down on rivals, waterfall jumps test your timing, and some stages end in a boss fight. Power-ups collected along the way upgrade your guns and speed, so the boat that limps through the early rivers becomes a properly dangerous machine by the end.
The camera angle and smooth, automatic scrolling will feel familiar to anyone who played R.C. Pro-Am, and reviewers at the time noticed the resemblance. The team behind it reads like a who's who of early Rare: Mark Betteridge programming and designing, Tim and Chris Stamper shaping the design, Kevin Bayliss on art, and David Wise, later famous for Donkey Kong Country, writing the soundtrack. Computer and Video Games scored it 93%, praising its graphics, smooth play and replay value, while The Games Machine found the waterfall jumps frustrating, a fair warning that this is a game with real teeth.
Cobra Triangle never had the name recognition of Battletoads or R.C. Pro-Am, and that is a big part of its appeal today. It has a way of winning over the people who discover it, and it turned up again in Rare Replay on Xbox One and later on Nintendo's own classic games service. Playing it on the original cartridge is the purest way to see what Rare was doing on the NES before the rest of the world caught on: tight controls, inventive objectives and a soundtrack that makes every stage feel like a chase scene.
in Cobra Triangle the player controls a weapon-equipped speedboat through 25 levels. Objectives include winning races, saving swimmers, and defusing bombs. The game also includes power-ups and is displayed from a 3D isometric perspective with automatic scrolling that follows the player's movement.
