Item Description

Scott Pilgrim fans know The Clash at Demonhead as Envy Adams' band, but the name came from this cartridge. Bryan Lee O'Malley borrowed this NES cartridge's title for the band in his comics, a nod that introduced a whole new generation of readers to the name. It is a fitting tribute to one of the NES library's great cult adventures, a game with more freedom and stranger ideas than almost anything else on the system.

You play Billy “Big Bang” Blitz, a sergeant in the special forces unit S.A.B.R.E., called away from a beach vacation with his girlfriend Mary to rescue Professor Plum, the kidnapped creator of a Doomsday Bomb. The trail leads to the mountain range of Demonhead, and the plot gets wonderfully weirder from there, with oddball bosses, a hermit who teaches Bang strange new powers and twists that keep piling up the deeper he goes.

Instead of a straight line of levels, Demonhead is a world map of more than forty routes that you can travel, backtrack along and revisit in almost any order. Bang starts with a basic handgun and spends money at the shop on stronger weapons, while the Hermit teaches him to channel Force into powers: shrinking to slip through tiny gaps, flying, healing, turning invincible and teleporting back to places he has already been. Figuring out where to go next, and what you need to get there, is a big part of the fun, giving the game a Metroidvania sense of discovery years before that word existed.

Vic Tokai released it in Japan as Dengeki Big Bang! and in North America later in 1989, and its bright, comic-book art and catchy chiptune score give it a personality to match its ambitions. Fittingly, the game behind a favorite indie-comics in-joke is every bit as offbeat as its fans would hope, and few NES adventures give you this much freedom to wander, get lost and find your own way to Demonhead's secrets.

About the game

Clash at Demonhead is an open-ended platformer. The player takes control of Billy "Big Bang" Blitz, who is capable of running, jumping, and shooting. He is initially armed with a handgun, though various upgrades can be purchased from a shop. He later gains the ability to perform various powers by collecting Force, including shrinking, teleportation to previously-visited areas, flight, healing, and invincibility. The player chooses levels from a world map that consists of over forty routes. Various objectives must be met to complete the game.
