Item Description

Stone Age dads do not get kidnapped quietly. When Chuck Rock, now a hugely successful carver of stone automobiles, is snatched by Brick Jagger, a rival manufacturer jealous of his talent, the rescue falls to the smallest member of the family: Chuck Junior, a baby armed with a club nearly as big as he is. It is a gloriously silly setup, and Core Design plays it for every laugh it is worth.

Handing the lead to Junior changes the feel of the series. Where his dad belly-bumped his way through the first game, Junior's club gives his attacks extra reach, so you can swat dinosaurs and cave critters from a safer distance and keep your momentum through each side-scrolling stage. Occasional rock-moving puzzles break up the platforming, and the prehistoric world is stuffed with sight gags, from the enemy designs to the way the levels themselves are built around a joke.

On the Sega CD, the adventure is bookended by animated opening and ending cinemas produced by Tony Garth Animation, and the music comes from Nathan McCree and Martin Iveson. McCree would go on to score Tomb Raider for Core a few years later, which gives this cheerful caveman romp a fun footnote in British game history.

Critics at the time found the controls a little stiff but singled out the opening cinema and the humor packed into the level design, and that is a fair picture of the game today: a bright, funny platformer with a lot of personality and a very particular early-'90s European flavor. Pair it with the first Chuck Rock and you have the whole family saga, with the baby of the house stealing the show.
