A bell rings over the Millennial Fair, Lucca's new teleporter sparks to life, and a girl with a strange pendant vanishes into the year 600 A.D. Within minutes Crono is chasing her through time, and Chrono Trigger never slows down from there. Few role-playing games have such a perfect sense of momentum, and the Nintendo DS release, published by Square Enix in 2008, is a superb way to experience it.
The original 1995 Super Nintendo game was built by a famous creative partnership: Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii and Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama, with music led by Yasunori Mitsuda alongside Nobuo Uematsu. The result is a story that leaps from prehistory to a ruined future in 2300 A.D., from the magical Kingdom of Zeal to the End of Time, carried by a cast that includes the chivalrous Frog, the robot Robo, the cavewoman Ayla and the brooding Magus. Mitsuda's “Corridors of Time” and “Frog's Theme” are among the most celebrated pieces of game music ever written.
Battles flow without a jarring transition to a separate screen, with enemies visible in the world and the Active Time Battle system keeping every fight brisk. Pairs and trios of party members can combine into Dual and Triple Techs, which makes choosing your three-person team a real strategic decision. The quest is built for replays, with New Game+ and a famous spread of multiple endings that reward finishing the game at different points in the story.
The DS version gives that classic everything it deserves. It features a fresh English translation, includes the anime cutscenes first added for the PlayStation release, and adds new content in the Lost Sanctum, the Dimensional Vortex, the Arena of the Ages monster-battling mode and an additional ending. The dual screens keep maps and menus on hand without cluttering the action, and an optional classic layout is there for purists. With the original adventure intact and this much added on top, the DS release is the version many fans point newcomers toward, and a cornerstone of a DS RPG shelf.
When a newly developed teleportation device malfunctions at the Millennial Fair, young Crono must travel through time to rescue his misfortunate companion from an intricate web of past and present perils. The swashbuckling adventure that ensues soon unveils an evil force set to destroy the world, triggering Crono's race against time to change the course of history and bring about a brighter future.
