Item Description

No one has ever escaped Butcher Bay. That's the promise hanging over The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and the game spends every minute making you believe it. A prequel to the film Pitch Black, it puts you behind the silver eyes of Richard B. Riddick, delivered by the bounty hunter Johns to a maximum-security prison on a barren planet, and leaves you to fight, sneak and bargain your way out.

It came from Starbreeze Studios working alongside Tigon Studios, Vin Diesel's own game company, with Diesel voicing Riddick himself, and that pedigree shows. Rather than a quick movie cash-in, Butcher Bay is a first-person game that refuses to be just a shooter. Guns are scarce for long stretches, so you survive on fists and improvised weapons in a weighty, close-up melee system, sticking to the shadows and taking guards down from behind. Riddick's eyeshine, the surgical “shine job” from the films, lets him see in total darkness, which turns lights-out sections into a hunter's playground.

The prison itself is the star. Butcher Bay is built in three increasingly secure holding areas above a subterranean mining operation, and getting through it means dealing with inmates who trade favors and information, guards who can be outwitted, and a warden, Hoxie, who runs the place like a private kingdom. Side jobs for other prisoners, a stint in the mines and the dreaded Double Max block give it the texture of an adventure game as much as an action one, and hidden cigarette packs reward thorough explorers with unlockable extras.

Released on the Xbox in 2004, it was widely acclaimed and is still a go-to answer whenever someone asks whether a licensed game can be great in its own right. Its lighting and shadow work showed off the hardware in a way few games of the era managed, and it laid down the first-person stealth-and-brawl style Starbreeze would carry into The Darkness. Played on the console it was built for, it's a sharp reminder of how good the original Xbox library could be.
