Item Description

Chiki Chiki Boys is one of those action-packed gems from the early 1990s that deserves far more love than it typically gets. Capcom first released it in arcades as Mega Twins, and Visco ported it to the Sega Genesis for Sega, which brought it to North America in 1993 under its Japanese title. The twin princes of Alurea set out after a monster has laid waste to their land, searching for the legendary stone Dragon Blue Eyes to restore their kingdom and hacking and slashing their way through a world overflowing with monsters, bosses and secrets. It has unmistakable Capcom arcade DNA running through every stage: tight controls, satisfying combat and a visual charm that holds up well today.

The gameplay sits in a sweet spot between a brawler and a classic action-platformer. The princes swing a magic sword, cling to walls to reach high ground and unleash screen-clearing magic bombs, and the gold that enemies drop buys upgrades between levels that lengthen the life bar and strengthen attacks, a light progression loop that gives it more depth than the average arcade port. The key change from the arcade is that the Genesis version is single-player and drops the cabinet's two-player co-op; instead the player picks one of the two brothers, and they play differently: the red twin can carry five magic spells to his brother's three, while the blue twin hits harder with his sword.

Visually, the game is a treat. Its bright, almost storybook look, with chunky sprite work and imaginative enemy designs, feels pulled straight from a fantasy cartoon, and the soundtrack keeps pace with energetic, catchy tunes. For a game that doesn't often make best-of-Genesis lists, it has a personality that punches well above its weight, and the arcade original's charm survives the trip to Sega's 16-bit console intact.
