Picture the Sanderson living room from ten centimeters off the floor: the couch is a cliff face, the kitchen table a distant plateau, and a stray candy wrapper is a job waiting to be done. That is the world of Chibi-Robo!, the GameCube's oddest and sweetest adventure, where a tiny household robot arrives as an eighth-birthday present for Jenny Sanderson and sets about repairing a family that is quietly coming apart.
And the Sandersons need the help. George is an unemployed former toymaker who keeps spending money on toys, Helen is worn thin by the bills, and Jenny has decided she is a frog. Chibi-Robo doesn't even speak for himself; his assistant Telly Vision does the talking. Every good deed earns Happy Points, whether that means scrubbing footprints with a toothbrush, hauling trash, or easing a family member's bad day, and those points push Chibi-Robo up the rankings of his fellow robots toward the top title of Super Chibi-Robo, which comes with unlimited battery life.
That battery is the clever twist. Every step drains it, so planning routes between wall outlets, where he plugs in to recharge and save, turns housework into a gentle survival puzzle. Days and nights run on a timer, and after dark the house belongs to the toys: Drake Redcrest, the Free Rangers and a whole cast of oddballs with problems of their own, while the robotic Spydorz creep through the rooms. Gadgets like the Chibi-Copter and Chibi-Blaster open up new heights and new fights, scrap metal can be built into helpful Utilibots, and even Chibi-Robo's footsteps tap out little musical notes, a sound-design touch critics singled out.
Its road to release was nearly as unlikely as its premise. Skip Ltd. first built the project as a point-and-click adventure, and it sat on hold until Shigeru Miyamoto came aboard as senior producer and helped reshape it into the game Nintendo published. Directors Kenichi Nishi, a Chrono Trigger veteran, and Hiroshi Moriyama gave it a tone unlike anything else in Nintendo's catalog: funny, melancholy and deeply kind. Sequels followed on DS and 3DS, but this GameCube original is the one that tells the Sanderson story, and the one that turned a robot who just wants everyone to be happy into a cult hero.
Like most families, the Sandersons bicker about money and cleaning. Unlike most families, though, they also have robotic spiders, aliens, and talking toys to worry about. Enter Chibi-Robo, a tiny robot programmed to spread happiness. Join him on his quest to restore order to the Sanderson house and SAVE THE WORLD!
