Pokémon TCG single: Charizard - #4/102 - Base Set (LP). Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.

Item Description

Ask anyone who opened Pokémon packs at the end of the 1990s which card they were hunting, and the answer is almost always the same. Base Set Charizard was the card that turned a schoolyard craze into a collecting hobby, the holo that got traded, argued over and stared at through binder pages more than any other.

Mitsuhiro Arita's artwork is a big part of why it still lands so hard. Charizard spreads its wings and breathes fire inside the holofoil window, and for a generation of collectors that image simply is vintage Pokémon. Arita illustrated many of the original-era cards, but none is more closely tied to his name than this one.

On the table it played like a final boss. At 120 HP it towered over most of the original set, and its Energy Burn Pokémon Power could turn every Energy attached to it into Fire Energy for the turn, fueling Fire Spin: 100 damage for four Fire Energy, with two Energy cards discarded every time you used it. Big, costly and dramatic, it was exactly what a fully evolved dragon should feel like, and its Pokédex entry adds to the legend with flames hot enough to melt boulders.

This is Charizard from the original Base Set, card 4 of 102, a holo rare illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. For a vintage binder, a Kanto starter collection, or a Charizard run that begins where the hobby itself began, there is no substitute for it.
