Item Description

Rome, 275 BC. You are a centurion with a single legion to your name and an ambition far larger: to become Caesar. Centurion: Defender of Rome gets you there two ways, by conquering the known world and by keeping the people of Rome happy, and the tension between the battlefield and the "Bread and Circuses" politics back home is what makes it so absorbing.

Campaigns are planned turn by turn on a map of the ancient world, then resolved in real-time battles that you can pause to issue orders to your formations as your legions face Celts, Carthaginians and Parthians. Between campaigns the game opens up into set pieces straight out of a sword-and-sandal epic. You can finance gladiatorial games, race chariots in the Circus Maximus, fight naval battles at sea, and pursue an alliance with Egypt that can extend to seducing Cleopatra herself. Every spectacle feeds back into your career, because a conqueror the mob adores is a conqueror who keeps rising.

Designer Kellyn Beck had already created several Cinemaware games, and Centurion was built to match that studio's cinematic style, with dramatic graphics, animation and sound effects. Beck drew inspiration from Ben-Hur and Spartacus, and the game's working title was simply Caesar. Developed by Bits of Magic and published by Electronic Arts, it debuted on MS-DOS in 1990 and reached the Genesis in 1991. Computer Gaming World said it "succeeds admirably" as entertainment rather than strict historical simulation, which is exactly the spirit to bring to it: this is Roman history as Hollywood spectacle.

Empire-building strategy was thin on the ground in the Genesis's early years, which makes Centurion a distinctive pick for players who want something slower and more cerebral from the console. It is a home-computer favorite reshaped for the living room, and a fascinating look at how early-'90s designers tried to make ancient history play like a blockbuster.
