Item Description

Few arcade games feel as frantic in the hands as Centipede, and the triumph of Atari's 2600 version is how much of that panic it keeps. A segmented bug winds its way down through a field of mushrooms, dropping a row every time it hits an obstacle, and every shot that splits it creates new heads charging toward your little shooter at the bottom of the screen. Clear one centipede and the next one is already on its way.

The supporting cast is what makes Centipede so tense. Spiders bounce in from the sides, chewing up mushrooms and lunging into the zone where you can move. Fleas plummet from the top when the lower field thins out, seeding fresh mushrooms as they fall, and scorpions sweep across the screen poisoning mushrooms so that any centipede that touches one plunges straight down at you. Managing the mushroom field becomes its own strategy: clear too much and the fleas rain down, leave too much and the centipede snakes along unpredictable paths.

The arcade original, designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg, was played with a trackball. Here the joystick takes over, giving you free movement across the bottom of the screen and continuous fire when you hold the button, and it is quick and responsive. To fit the hardware, the mushrooms became flat little blocks and the colors are simpler, but the speed and the sound of the arcade game came through remarkably well, which is why this conversion still has such a good reputation among 2600 players.

It is the way a lot of fans first played Centipede at home, and it is still a wonderfully replayable shooter: short, fierce rounds that make "one more try" very easy to say.
