Item Description

It opens with an ending. Richter Belmont storms Dracula's throne room in a replay of the climax of Rondo of Blood, and then the story jumps ahead: years later the castle has risen again, Richter has vanished, and Alucard, Dracula's son, wakes from his long sleep to deal with it. What follows is the game that took Castlevania off its straight-line path and opened it into one enormous, interconnected castle, and the genre it helped define still carries half its name: Metroidvania.

Exploring that castle is a joy. Alucard glides through gothic halls, a vast library, a clock tower and deep catacombs, and every relic he finds, from the power to turn into a bat, a wolf or a cloud of mist to the ability to double-jump, reveals paths that were out of reach an hour earlier. Layered on top are real RPG systems: experience levels, a huge arsenal of weapons, shields and armor, spells entered with fighting-game style inputs, and familiars that follow Alucard into battle. Death himself strips away your starting gear in the opening minutes, a cruel and memorable way to send you back to square one.

Michiru Yamane's score ranges from baroque organ and harpsichord to driving rock and brooding ambient pieces, and the hand-drawn sprite work still looks spectacular on original hardware. Then there is the secret players remember discovering for themselves: what seems like the finale is only the halfway point, and the right steps unlock a second, inverted castle that turns the entire map upside down. Because of it, the map completion counter famously climbs well past 100 percent.

Built by Konami's Tokyo team with Koji Igarashi as assistant director, Symphony of the Night began a long line of exploration-driven Castlevania games and has shaped countless independent games since. The voice acting is cheesy in a way fans now quote lovingly ("What is a man?"), and the depth beneath it rewards return visits for years. Few PlayStation games are so often named among the best ever made, and fewer still have shaped a genre this directly.
