Fifteen years after defeating Dracula, Christopher Belmont gets the worst possible news: the Count is back, and he has taken Christopher's son Soleiyu and turned him into a servant of darkness. Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge is the sequel where Konami's Game Boy series hit its stride, and among handheld Castlevania fans it is the entry most often named the best of the original Game Boy trio.

The biggest change is structure. Instead of a single march forward, you choose the order in which to take on four castles, each with its own theme of crystal, cloud, plant or rock, before the way into Dracula's own castle opens. That bit of freedom, very much in the spirit of Mega Man's stage select, makes every run feel a little different and gives the game a confidence the first entry lacked. Sub-weapons return as well, with the axe and holy water joining the whip and hearts once again feeding them, so the familiar NES rhythm of collecting and spending finally comes to the handheld. The action moves at a quicker, more responsive clip than The Adventure. Rope climbing is still central, and the level design uses it brilliantly, with vertical climbs and tricky traversal that make the most of a small screen.

Then there is the music. The Belmont's Revenge soundtrack is regularly singled out as some of the finest audio on the Game Boy, with driving, melodic stage themes that would not sound out of place on a home console. Even players who have never finished the game tend to know a track or two.

The story carries real weight, too. Confronting Soleiyu before Dracula himself turns the final stretch into a father's rescue mission rather than just another monster hunt. Konami brought the game back in the 2019 Castlevania Anniversary Collection, but on an original Game Boy it plays exactly as it did in 1991: the handheld Castlevania where the series learned to give players choices without losing its gothic bite.

Now not only do you have to rescue your kid from the Count's clutches, you have to first track him down in four creep packed Castles. Fortunately, you posses weapons like armor piercing Battle Axes, beast burning Holy Water, and the Legendary Mystic Whip. And you can increase your arsenal with power up items like Crystal Balls, Hearts, and Candles. Strap on your shield and step into the shadows. That is, if you're prepared for the dwellers of darkness.
