Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Simon Belmont has a whip, a handful of hearts and a castle full of horror-movie monsters between him and Dracula. That is the entire premise of Konami's original Castlevania, and few games of its era did so much with so little.

First released for the Famicom Disk System in Japan in 1986 and on the NES in North America in 1987, Castlevania set the template for everything that followed: deliberate, weighty platforming, a whip that grows stronger as you go, and sub-weapons such as the dagger, axe, holy water, cross and stopwatch, powered by the hearts you knock loose from candles. Its stage-by-stage march through Dracula's castle pits Simon against a gallery of classic monsters, including the Phantom Bat, Medusa, a pair of Mummies, Frankenstein's monster with his hopping companion Igor, the dreaded Grim Reaper and finally Dracula himself.

It is famously demanding. Simon cannot change direction in mid-air, an enemy hit knocks him backward (often straight into a pit), and the Medusa Heads seem designed purely to test your patience. Yet every challenge is learnable, and finally clearing a stage that stopped you cold is a big part of the game's lasting pull. The music, by Kinuyo Yamashita with Satoe Terashima, is among the best on the NES; Vampire Killer, Stalker and Wicked Child have been remixed throughout the series ever since.

This Game Boy Advance edition belongs to Nintendo's Classic NES Series, the 2004 line that reissued NES favorites for the handheld. It plays the original game rather than a remake, so the stages, bosses and difficulty are the ones players faced on the NES. One note for purists: the GBA screen is smaller than the NES picture, so the image is scaled to fit. For a portable way to play the game that started Castlevania, it is a charming piece of Nintendo and Konami history.
