Eight games, four platforms' worth of whip-cracking and a straight line from the NES to the 16-bit era: the Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a compact history of how Konami built gaming's great gothic action series. Released in 2019 as part of Konami's 50th anniversary celebration, it gathers the franchise's 8-bit and 16-bit roots in one place, the best possible starting point for anyone who wants to see where the Belmonts' feud with Dracula began.

It opens where it all started, with Simon Belmont climbing Dracula's castle in the original Castlevania, stiff jumps, swinging whip and all. Simon's Quest follows with its strange, cryptic open world and a day-night cycle announced by the immortal line "What a horrible night to have a curse." Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse then introduces Trevor Belmont, branching routes and three allies you can recruit along the way: the climber Grant, the sorceress Sypha and a young Alucard making his first appearance. Super Castlevania IV on the Super NES lets the whip lash in eight directions, wraps it all in a lush, moody soundtrack and is a series favorite for good reason.

The handheld chapters fill in the family tree. Castlevania: The Adventure and Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge bring the action to the Game Boy with Christopher Belmont, and the second is a real step up in level design and music. Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis sends vampire hunters John Morris and Eric Lecarde across Europe in an effects-heavy, blood-soaked outing scored by Michiru Yamane, who would go on to shape the series' later sound. The wild card is Kid Dracula, a cheerful Famicom parody starring Dracula's pint-sized heir, a game most Western players only knew through its Game Boy remake.

Beyond the games, the collection includes a digital eBook with insight from developers, artists and creators inspired by the series, and modern conveniences such as save states take the sting out of the toughest stretches. It is the most efficient way to own the classic Castlevania canon on PS4, and it makes a fitting shelf piece as Konami's own anniversary tribute to Dracula's longest-running rivals.
