Walk Simon Belmont through the gates of Dracula's castle and “Vampire Killer” kicks in, a driving, minor-key melody that Castlevania games have been reprising and remixing ever since. It is the perfect introduction to Konami's NES original, released in North America in 1987 after its Japanese debut the year before: a gothic monster gauntlet built on deliberate movement, careful enemy placement and an atmosphere borrowed lovingly from classic horror films.
Simon fights with the Vampire Killer, a whip that grows longer and stronger as you power it up, and a set of sub-weapons fueled by hearts hidden in candles: the throwing dagger, the arcing axe, holy water that sets the floor ablaze, the boomerang-like cross and the stopwatch that freezes enemies in place. Jumps are committed arcs you can't steer once you leave the ground, and taking a hit knocks Simon backward, often straight into a pit. That combination turns every staircase and every Medusa head bobbing across the screen into a real threat, and makes learning each section a satisfying test of nerve.
The bosses read like a monster-movie marathon: a giant Phantom Bat, Medusa, a pair of mummies, Frankenstein's monster with Igor hopping at his side, the Grim Reaper and finally the Count himself. Death and his swarm of spinning sickles are still among the most notorious difficulty spikes on the NES. The soundtrack, credited to Kinuyo Yamashita, includes “Wicked Child” and “Heart of Fire” alongside “Vampire Killer,” and those melodies became the foundation the series' music has drawn on for decades.
Castlevania went on to become one of gaming's longest-running series, from Symphony of the Night to the Netflix animated show, but playing the original on NES hardware is the clearest way to see where it all came from. The whip, the sub-weapons, the hearts in candles, even the pot roast hidden inside the castle walls: it all starts here.
Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on earth. You've arrived at Castlevania, and you're here on business: To destroy forever the Curse of the Evil Count. Unfortunately, everybody's home this evening. Bats, ghosts, every kind of creature you can imagine. You'll find 'em all over the place, if they don't find you first. Because you've got to get through six monstrous floors before you even meet up with the Master of the House. Your Magic Whip will help, and you'll probably find a weapons or two along the way. But once you make it to the tower, you can count on a Duel to the Death. The Count has waited 100 years for a rematch.
