After three years of exosuits, wall-running and orbital dogfights, Call of Duty: WWII brought the series home. Sledgehammer Games' 2017 entry returned to the war that launched the franchise, the first time a mainline Call of Duty had gone back to World War II since World at War in 2008, and it does so with a heavier, more grounded feel than the series had shown in years.

You play Private Ronald "Red" Daniels of the US 1st Infantry Division, starting on Omaha Beach on D-Day and pushing through France, the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge toward the Rhine. Josh Duhamel plays the hard-edged Sergeant Pierson, and Red's friendship with Robert Zussman anchors the story. Health does not regenerate in the campaign, so you lean on your squadmates for medkits and ammunition, which makes the unit feel like a lifeline rather than background noise. One standout mission trades the rifle for a disguise, as a French Resistance operative bluffs her way through a German-held building in occupied Paris.

Multiplayer goes back to classic run-and-gun play, organized around Divisions such as Infantry, Airborne and Armored that shape your loadout and playstyle. Its signature addition is War mode, objective-driven battles that play like short campaign chapters, with one team storming the Normandy beaches while the other holds the bunkers. Headquarters added a social hub on the Normandy coast where players gathered between matches. Zombies, meanwhile, goes full gothic horror with The Final Reich, a co-op story set in a snowbound Bavarian village and voiced by a cast that includes David Tennant and Ving Rhames.

WWII was the moment Call of Duty turned away from its jetpack era, and on PS4 it is the place to experience that reset in full: a cinematic tour of the European campaign seen through one soldier's eyes, Sledgehammer's take on Zombies at its most macabre, and a multiplayer design that put boots-on-the-ground firefights back at the center of the series.
