Item Description

The opening mission puts you in a Delta Force squad fighting block by block through a burning Manhattan, pushing toward the New York Stock Exchange while Russian forces pour into the city. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 starts at that pitch and rarely lets up, closing out the storyline Infinity Ward began with Call of Duty 4 and carried through Modern Warfare 2. Development was shared between Infinity Ward and the newly formed Sledgehammer Games, with Raven Software assisting, and the result is the biggest, loudest chapter of the trilogy.

The campaign follows the war as it spreads across Europe and beyond. Captain Price and Soap MacTavish, now hunted men, chase Vladimir Makarov, the terrorist whose actions lit the fuse on World War III, joined by Yuri, a former Russian soldier with his own reasons for wanting Makarov dead. Along the way you ride a runaway subway through London, watch the Eiffel Tower come down over Paris, and fight aboard a hijacked Russian presidential jet. It plays like a summer blockbuster in the best sense: tight, cinematic missions that keep changing the scenery and the stakes.

Multiplayer was the main event in 2011, and MW3 reworked the formula in ways the series kept. Killstreaks became Pointstreaks, so capturing objectives counted toward rewards, and players picked between three Strike Packages, Assault, Support and Specialist, to suit how they played. Kill Confirmed made its debut here, asking teams to grab dog tags from fallen enemies to score. Spec Ops returned with its co-op missions and added Survival, a wave-based mode where you spend earnings between rounds on weapons, equipment and air support while the enemy waves grow nastier. Split-screen support makes it a strong pick for two players on one couch.

The game was a phenomenon on release, with Activision reporting a billion dollars in sales in just sixteen days. On PlayStation 3 it is the finale of the trilogy that defined console shooters for a generation, and the place to see how Price and Soap's story ends. The campaign and Survival waves are as replayable as ever on original hardware, and they make a fine excuse to hand a second controller to a friend.
