Item Description

The year is 2025, drones fill the sky, and a charismatic revolutionary named Raul Menendez has found a way to turn the world's automated armies against their owners. Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Treyarch's 2012 sequel, splits its campaign between that near future and the Cold War proxy wars of the 1980s, following Alex Mason and Frank Woods in the past and Alex's son David in the future as the long war against Menendez comes into focus. The missions range from the bush war in Angola and Soviet-era Afghanistan to a futuristic Los Angeles under siege.

It was the most experimental campaign the series had attempted. Choices and failures along the way branch the story toward multiple endings, Strike Force missions let you command squads, drones and turrets in open tactical battles whose outcomes carry forward, and you can tailor your loadout before each mission. Trent Reznor contributed the main theme to Jack Wall's score, giving the future sections a cold, electronic pulse.

Multiplayer introduced the Pick 10 create-a-class system, which gives every player ten points to spend on weapons, attachments, perks and Wildcards, and swapped killstreaks for Scorestreaks that reward playing the objective. Zombies grew into its biggest form yet with TranZit, a map strung together by a bus route across a ruined countryside, alongside Survival and Grief modes. Split-screen support for both multiplayer and Zombies made it a couch favorite, while the online modes were the heartbeat of the game at launch.

Black Ops II is a high point of the series for many players, with a villain who has real motives, a campaign willing to take risks, and a class system later Call of Duty games kept coming back to. On PS3 it captures the moment Treyarch pushed the formula hardest, and Menendez's story is worth playing even if you only ever came for the multiplayer.

About the game

Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops II propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare between old and new foes. In this conflict, the mechanized creations of men reign supreme, facing off against each other as their creators stay safe and unconflicted, and in the process grow ever softer. In this scenario an important question will be asked: What happens when an enemy steals the keys to your war? To understand such a possible future, you must understand where you have been.
