Black Ops has always been at its best when nobody can be trusted, and the early 1990s give Treyarch the perfect backdrop. Black Ops 6 lands in the Gulf War era, with the Cold War over, old enemies scattered and the CIA turning on its own people. Co-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision in 2024, it came out of the longest development cycle in Call of Duty history, four years spent rebuilding the sub-series' core systems, and the extra time shows in how confident it feels.

The campaign brings back series fixtures Frank Woods and Russell Adler alongside a new crew of operatives, disavowed by their own agency while chasing a shadowy paramilitary group called Pantheon. Between missions the team regroups at a safehouse you can explore and upgrade, and the missions themselves swing wildly in tone: desert warfare, a high-stakes casino heist, stealthy infiltration and a hallucinatory detour into outright horror that feels like a wink at the Zombies side of the house. That kind of variety is what Black Ops campaigns are known for, and this is one of the most playful the series has produced in years.

Multiplayer is built around omnimovement, which lets you sprint, dive and slide in any direction, so a firefight can end with someone diving backward around a corner, firing the whole way down. The classic Prestige progression system made a welcome return, too. Zombies goes back to the round-based format the community had been asking for, launching with two original maps: Terminus, an island prison facility hiding something far worse, and Liberty Falls, a small West Virginia town overrun by the undead. Holding out for one more round with friends is exactly as tense as it should be.

On PS4, Black Ops 6 brings a brand-new entry's campaign, multiplayer and Zombies to the console that carried the series through the previous decade. For a collector, it captures the moment Black Ops traded jungles and Cold War bunkers for the desert heat and neon of the early nineties, and the entry where omnimovement first changed the way Call of Duty moves.
