Item Description

A near-future military funeral became one of the internet's longest-running jokes when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare asked players to press a button to pay their respects. The moment is a fitting introduction to a game that tried a lot of new ideas at once. Sledgehammer Games' first full Call of Duty swapped the series' contemporary battlefields for 2054, a world where private military corporations rival nations and soldiers fight in powered exoskeletons.

Those Exo suits change how everything moves. You boost-jump onto rooftops, dodge sideways mid-air, slam down onto enemies from above and, in the campaign, use cloaking, grappling and other abilities depending on the mission. Directed-energy weapons and smart grenades sit alongside conventional rifles. The story follows Private Jack Mitchell, voiced by Troy Baker, who loses his arm and his best friend Will Irons in the opening battle for Seoul, then joins the Atlas Corporation run by Will's father Jonathan Irons, played by Kevin Spacey in a performance-captured turn. The campaign races from Lagos to Detroit to Santorini and Antarctica, with Atlas's motives growing darker at every stop.

Multiplayer is where the Exo movement left its biggest mark. Matches turned vertical and frantic, with boost jumps and dodges turning every firefight into a three-dimensional duel. The Pick 13 loadout system let you trade perks, attachments and scorestreaks against one another, and Exo Survival added a wave-based co-op mode where you upgrade your suit between rounds. The jet-pack movement would carry through the next few Call of Duty games before the series returned to the ground.

The PlayStation 3 version was built by High Moon Studios alongside Sledgehammer's current-gen release, bringing the full Exo-powered campaign to last-generation hardware with split-screen multiplayer intact. It is the game that kicked off Call of Duty's futuristic era, and the PS3 disc is the way to play that turning point on the console where the franchise spent its biggest years.
