Most war games move you from soldier to soldier. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One keeps you with one squad from start to finish. Treyarch's console side-story follows the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, the famous Big Red One, from the deserts of North Africa through the invasion of Sicily to Omaha Beach on D-Day and the push across the Siegfried Line into Germany, and by the end the men beside you feel like people you have fought alongside.
That bond comes from the performances. The squad is voiced by actors from HBO's Band of Brothers, including Michael Cudlitz, James Madio, Frank John Hughes and Richard Speight Jr., and each chapter is framed with period footage from the Military Channel, narrated by Mark Hamill in the style of a classic wartime documentary. Graeme Revell's score adds cinematic weight, and the story's emotional pull earned the game the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences award for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Character Development.
On the ground it is classic early Call of Duty: iron sights, two weapons and a pocket of frag and smoke grenades, with enemy guns to scavenge mid-fight. The missions vary the pace well. You man mounted machine guns and flak cannons, roll forward in a tank, plant explosives on enemy guns, and in one standout chapter take the place of your character's brother, nicknamed Stretch, as a bombardier and gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator. Omaha Beach is the emotional peak, capturing the chaos of storming ashore under fire with the squad you have come to know scattered across the sand.
Big Red One was the last Call of Duty released on the GameCube, and it gives Nintendo's console one of its most polished World War II campaigns. For series fans, it is the chapter that traded globe-hopping scale for camaraderie, and for GameCube collectors, a high point of the system's shooter library.
