Item Description
Most racing games punish you for hitting things. Burnout 3: Takedown pays you for it. Criterion Games built the third Burnout around a brilliantly simple idea: slam a rival into a wall, a pillar or oncoming traffic and you score a Takedown, which fills your boost so you can go even faster and hunt the next car. Speed feeds aggression and aggression feeds speed, in a loop that is almost impossible to put down.
The feel is what sells it. Boost builds from near misses, drifting and driving into oncoming lanes, but wrecking opponents is the fastest way to fill the bar, and every Takedown cuts to a slow-motion shot of the victim folding into the scenery. Crashing yourself isn't the end either: Aftertouch lets you steer your own tumbling wreck into a passing rival for a revenge Takedown. Road Rage events throw out the finish line entirely and ask how many cars you can destroy before your own gives out.
Then there is Crash mode, the series' signature puzzle box. Each event drops you at a busy junction with one run-up and asks how much damage you can cause, with score multipliers, cash pickups and a Crashbreaker that detonates your wreck once enough traffic has piled in. Events stretch across the USA, Europe and the Far East, more than 60 vehicles wait to be unlocked, and DJ Stryker cuts in between tracks of a licensed rock and pop-punk soundtrack that sounds exactly like 2004.
Critics heaped praise on it, and plenty of players still call it the high-water mark of arcade racing: the moment Burnout found the balance between racing and vehicular combat that Burnout Revenge and Burnout Paradise would build on. The Xbox version was designed with online races over Xbox Live in mind, but the heart of the game was always offline, in the career events, the Crash junctions and the split-screen grudge matches against whoever was sitting next to you on the couch.
