Item Description

A kung-fu rabbit, a rock-star lion and a Thai-boxing rat walk into a tournament, and that is only the beginning of the roster in Brutal: Above the Claw. GameTek's animal fighter takes place on Brutal Island, where the Dali Llama, holder of the Belt of Heaven, watches over a gathering of martial artists who each want to prove they are the world's one true champion. Kung-Fu Bunny, Prince Leon, Rhei Rat, Foxy Roxy, Ivan the Bear and the rest bring cartoon personality to every bout.

The 32X edition, released in North America in March 1995 and also known as Brutal Unleashed: Above the Claw, is a souped-up take on the original Sega CD game Brutal: Paws of Fury. It adds two new fighters, Chung Poe, a mole who transforms into a bat-dragon hybrid in battle, and Psycho Kitty, a cat who seems to be running on pure hyperactivity, along with new arenas, a remixed intro and new music, including a pumping techno soundtrack that Next Generation singled out in its review.

Brutal's most distinctive idea is how you grow your fighter. Rather than handing you every special move up front, the game lets you learn new attacks as you progress and save them with passwords, so your chosen animal becomes stronger the longer you stick with it. It gives single-player runs a sense of progression that most fighting games of the era never attempted, even if critics felt the action itself could be on the slow side.

Reviews were mixed, with praise for the colorful graphics and music and grumbles about shallow, sometimes unfair fights, but the game's offbeat charm has never been in question. On the short-lived 32X it is a memorable oddity: an animal kung-fu tournament with real personality and the extra fighters that make this the add-on's own spin on the Brutal formula.
