Released in 1995, Brutal: Above the Claw is an enhanced port of the Sega CD fighting game Brutal: Paws of Fury. Featuring a cast of martial-arts-trained animals, it blends traditional 2D fighting gameplay with a unique sense of humor and stylized cartoon presentation. Characters like the rabbit fighter Tai Cheetah, the ferocious panther Prince Leon, and the goofy yet deadly Kung-Fu Bunny each bring distinctive movesets and personalities to the roster.
The 32X version improved on the original with sharper graphics, faster animation, and two new playable characters: Chung Poe and Psycho Kitty. Gameplay emphasizes learning special moves through a dojo-style progression, giving it a different feel compared to arcade-focused fighters of the era. While not as refined as genre giants like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter II, its quirky cast and distinctive style have made it a cult favorite.
