Item Description

A quiet coffee on a Paris afternoon, a man in a clown costume, and then an explosion that tears the café apart. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars wastes no time pulling American tourist George Stobbart into a conspiracy far bigger than one bombing, and that opening has hooked adventure fans since Revolution Software first released the game on PC in 1996.

George teams up with Nico Collard, a sharp French photojournalist with her own reasons to follow the story, and the trail leads to the Knights Templar and a secret that has survived for centuries. The investigation takes them from the streets of Paris to the Irish countryside, Syria, Spain and Scotland, and the game's strength is its mix of genuine mystery and dry, likeable humor. The characters you question along the way are full of personality, and the puzzles reward careful observation rather than random item-combining.

Revolution built the Game Boy Advance version itself, with a new engine designed for the handheld, and the clever part is the control scheme. Instead of a mouse cursor, you steer George directly with the D-pad, and holding a button reveals every point of interest in the scene, so you can pick one and let George walk over to examine it. Critics praised the approach, and one reviewer said he would happily use it on PC. The port also revises the infamous goat puzzle in response to criticism of the original and adds a new sewer room that ties into the later Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon. Cartridge limits meant losing the voice acting and animated cutscenes, but original composer Barrington Pheloung worked with the team to keep the score's key musical cues.

It earned an 80 on Metacritic, and it was one of the very few classic point-and-click adventures to make the jump to the GBA. For adventure game fans, this cartridge is a fascinating piece of Broken Sword history: the full Templar mystery redesigned for a handheld, years before the Director's Cut came to the Nintendo DS.
