Item Description

It begins with a boy waking up to find that nobody in his village remembers him. His father, a priest of the Church of St. Eva, is gone, and so is his sister. That haunting opening sets the tone for Breath of Fire II, Capcom's 1994 Super Famicom RPG, released in North America in December 1995, and one of the darker, stranger stories of the 16-bit role-playing boom.

Set 500 years after the first Breath of Fire, it follows Ryu Bateson, a Ranger and sword-for-hire who carries the blood of the Dragon Clan and can transform into powerful draconic forms in battle. When his friend Bow is framed for a crime, clearing his name pulls them into a conspiracy that reaches all the way to the church his father served. Along the way the party fills with some of the most memorable oddballs in the genre: Katt, a Woren cat-woman fighting in the coliseum; Rand, a pangolin brawler who fights barehanded; Nina, a princess exiled for her black wings; Sten, a monkey soldier turned trickster; Jean, a lovestruck frog prince; and Spar, a plant who talks to nature. Bleu, the sorceress from the first game, waits as an optional recruit.

The systems run deep for a 1994 RPG. Every character has a Personal Action outside combat, used to reach new areas, smash obstacles, avoid traps or move around the world more easily. A Monster Meter shows how likely an encounter is, and the Formation system lets you arrange the party for speed, defense or attack. The standout is the town you build yourself, inviting special characters found around the world to move in and choosing between three carpenters with different building styles. Six Shamans can join that town, and fusing up to two with a party member transforms them with new looks and abilities, an experiment that rewards a lot of tinkering.

Produced by Tokuro Fujiwara with music by Yuko Takehara, Breath of Fire II is a direct sequel and a big step up in ambition from the original, even if its English script is famously rough around the edges. Among the Super Nintendo's great run of Capcom and Square adventures, it is the entry where Breath of Fire found its voice: melancholy, funny and willing to go dark.
