Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The box shows minor wear along the edges. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Ryu is the last of the Light Dragon clan, and when the Dark Dragon Empire burns his village, he discovers that the blood in his veins lets him become something far more powerful than a farm boy with a sword. That is the spark that launched Breath of Fire, Capcom's long-running fantasy RPG series. The original arrived on the Super Nintendo in 1993 in Japan, and its North American release was actually published by Squaresoft. In 2001 Capcom brought the adventure to the Game Boy Advance, giving one of the 16-bit era's more distinctive RPGs a second life in your pocket.

The story follows Ryu across a world divided between the Light and Dark Dragon clans as the Empire, led by Emperor Zog, hunts for the Goddess Keys that could unleash a dangerous power. Along the way he gathers one of the most memorable parties of the era. Nina is a winged princess of Wyndia, Bo is a wolf-like hunter, Karn is a thief who can fuse with other party members into new forms, Gobi is a fish-man merchant who can swim the seas, and Ox and Mogu bring their own talents. Every companion has a field ability for getting past obstacles, which turns the overworld into a puzzle you solve with the right teammate.

Ryu's dragon transformations are the heart of the battles. Visiting shrines across the world unlocks new forms that turn a tough fight on its head, and the turn-based combat rewards building the right team for each challenge. There is also a popular fishing minigame, expanded for this release, and an optional companion, the sorceress Bleu, waiting for players who explore off the beaten path.

The GBA version adds new save options built for play on the go and touches up the visuals, making it a much more convenient way to experience the original than tracking down a Super Nintendo cartridge. Capcom followed it with a GBA port of Breath of Fire II, and together they form a terrific pocket-sized pair. This is where the dragon saga begins, and the version that fits it into a coat pocket.
