Item Description

Bravely Default is built on a simple, irresistible gamble. Choose Default and a character guards, banking a Brave Point for later; choose Brave and they spend points they may not even have yet, unleashing up to four actions in a single turn and then standing helpless while the debt is repaid. Every battle becomes a question of when to hold back and when to go all in, and that push and pull made the 3DS original one of the freshest turn-based systems of its decade.

Four travelers carry the story across the land of Luxendarc. Tiz Arrior is the lone survivor after the Great Chasm swallows his village of Norende; Agnès Oblige is the Vestal of Wind, sworn to awaken the darkened crystals; Edea Lee breaks from her own nation's army to follow her sense of justice; and Ringabel is a charming flirt with amnesia and a mysterious journal that seems to know what happens next. Their pilgrimage plays like a love letter to classic Final Fantasy, complete with a deep job system in which defeated Asterisk holders hand over their classes, from Knight and Black Mage to stranger picks such as Spell Fencer, Performer and Vampire. Mixing abilities across jobs is where the real fun lives.

Revo of Sound Horizon wrote a sweeping score with some of the best battle themes in any modern Square Enix RPG, and producer Tomoya Asano's team went on to make Octopath Traveler. The game is also famous for its divisive second half, where a bold twist asks you to revisit familiar ground; some players call it brilliant, others repetitive, and nearly everyone agrees nothing else in the genre does it quite this way.

Flying Fairy HD Remaster launched alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025, rebuilding the game for a single screen with high-definition visuals and a redesigned interface. The adjustable encounter rate and battle speed return, event scenes can be fast-forwarded, and two new minigames, Luxencheer Rhythm Catch and Ringabel's Panic Cruise, add a little fun between dungeons. The hand-painted towns that once lived on a tiny 3DS screen finally get the resolution they deserved, which makes this the natural place to start the Bravely saga today.
