Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 Dracula was all candlelight, crimson silk and creeping shadows, and the Sega CD tie-in tried to capture that mood with the most cinematic tools a 1993 console could offer. Psygnosis developed this and the other contemporary versions for Sony Imagesoft, but the Sega CD release took its own path: where the Genesis and Super Nintendo games are near-identical side-scrolling platformers, this one is a side-scrolling beat 'em up with its own look and an extra stage.

You play Jonathan Harker, the young solicitor whose trip to Transylvania sets the story in motion, and you fight with fists and feet through seven stages based on scenes from the film. Digitized backgrounds and characters give the game a grainy, photographic texture, voiced briefings set up each level, and full-motion video clips from the movie itself play between the action. Familiar faces from the story turn up along the way, including Lucy Westenra as a boss.

Reviews were rough at the time: critics found the brawling stiff and the FMV pixelated, and nobody would mistake it for a hidden gem of the system. But that is also its fascination. Few games show the early CD era's hunger for real movie footage quite so plainly, and the result has a strange, eerie, B-movie atmosphere all its own, backed by a soundtrack from composer Mike Clarke.

For collectors of horror games, '90s movie adaptations or the Sega CD's FMV experiments, this is the distinctive version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, a different game from its cartridge cousins and a vivid snapshot of a time when putting the movie on a disc was the whole point.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is game loosely based on the 1992 film of the same name. It was released simultaneously for multiple consoles and while the plot remains largely the same, there are differing styles of gameplay and graphics across platforms. The Sega CD version is a side-scrolling action game where the player controls Jonathan Harker as he travels through seven stages, based on scenes from the film. This version makes use of digitized backgrounds, digitized actors/objects, voice briefings before each level and full motion video (FMV) cutscenes from the film.
