Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Put the joystick away. Brain Games is played entirely on Atari's twelve-button keypad controllers, and it turns the 2600 into something closer to an electronic puzzle book than an arcade machine. Programmed by Larry Kaplan for the console's early lineup, it pits you against the computer or a second player in a set of memory and number challenges that test concentration rather than reflexes.

There are six games in all. Touch Me asks you to repeat an ever-growing chain of tones, the same idea as Atari's 1974 arcade game that served as a precursor to the handheld Simon. Count Me does the same with strings of digits, Picture Me has you keep track of sets of pictures after the computer shuffles them around, Find Me tests your eye for subtle differences between figures, and Add Me turns the screen into a mental-math drill. Play Me drops the competition and lets the keypad act as a little musical instrument, with tunes such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" built in and a "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" duet for two keypads. Difficulty variants and Atari's cheerfully named "diabolical distractions," sudden noises designed to break your focus, keep the challenge from going stale.

Brain Games is a fascinating snapshot of the late 1970s, when Atari was still exploring what a home console could be beyond shooting and sports. It even turned up in a 1984 clinical book as a suggested tool for memory retraining exercises. For 2600 collectors, it is one of the key titles built around the keypad controllers, and a charming, slightly eccentric corner of the early library that sits naturally beside BASIC Programming.
