Item Description

Fire Lord Ozai on an enchantment that grows more powerful every turn is about as good a fit as the Avatar: The Last Airbender Secret Lair could ask for. Tetsuko's borderless art gives Braid of Fire the menace of the Fire Nation's ruler, and the flavor text comes from Ozai himself, declaring that his ancestors' dreams of conquest have been realized.

Braid of Fire debuted in Coldsnap with an odd mechanic: cumulative upkeep that adds mana instead of costing it. Each upkeep it gains an age counter and you add one red mana for each counter, so it gives one mana, then two, then three, and keeps climbing. Back when unspent mana caused mana burn, that was a real drawback. Since the rules dropped mana burn, it is pure upside, as long as you have ways to spend mana during your upkeep. Instants, flash creatures and activated abilities turn it into a ramping engine, and you can let it go any upkeep simply by not paying.

This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 2307, a borderless card illustrated by Tetsuko, offered here in rainbow foil. It is a fiery centerpiece for a red deck with plenty of instant-speed mana sinks.
