Item Description

Every crate in Boxyboy is a trap waiting to spring. Push one into a corner and it is stuck there for good; nudge it flat against a wall and you may never get it back out. That simple, unforgiving rule comes from Sokoban, the puzzle Hiroyuki Imabayashi created in 1981 and Thinking Rabbit first published in Japan in 1982, and Boxyboy is the TurboGrafx-16 edition of Media Rings' Sokoban World, which NEC translated and brought to North America in 1990.

You play a warehouse worker viewed from above, steering boxes onto the dotted storage spaces. You can push but never pull, so every stage becomes a question of planning the order of your moves before you take the first step. A hundred stages are spread across five worlds, America, Egypt, China, the South Pole and Japan, each with a different character in the lead, and extra stages are hidden along the way. The design is kind where it counts: the II button undoes a mistake, holding I speeds your worker up, and every cleared stage gives you a password so you can come back to it later.

Construction mode lets you build your own warehouse puzzles from walls and blocks and keep up to three of them saved at a time, and the game can also save progress past stage 20 to the backup memory of a TurboGrafx-CD or TurboBooster-Plus.

In a North American library best remembered for shooters and platformers, Boxyboy is a quiet, brainy outlier, the kind of game that eats an evening one stubborn crate at a time. As a sealed piece, it shows just how wide the TurboGrafx-16's lineup reached and gives a puzzle classic a spot on the shelf next to the system's action heavyweights.

About the game

The player controls a worker in a warehouse. Gameplay is simple: the goal of each level is to push the crates onto specific squares marked with a yellow dot. It's very easy to get boxes trapped, so the player must carefully consider the route. Boxyboy also features a level editor for players to create and play their own levels. In Japan, Boxyboy is known as Sokoban World and is an official part of the Sokoban series.
