Squeezing Pandora into a handheld sounded like a stunt, yet Borderlands 2 on PlayStation Vita keeps everything that made Gearbox's 2012 shooter a phenomenon: the procedurally generated guns, Claptrap's whining, and Handsome Jack taunting you over the radio from his space station high above the planet.
At heart it is a looter. You pick a Vault Hunter, each with skill trees that reshape how they play: Axton and his deployable turret, Maya the Siren with her Phaselock, Salvador dual-wielding his way through a Gunzerker rampage, Zer0 the decoy-and-stab assassin. Then you chase better weapons across bandit camps, frozen wastes and Hyperion fortresses. Every manufacturer has a personality, from Jakobs' old-west hand cannons to Tediore guns you throw like grenades when you reload, and the hunt for one more orange-rarity drop keeps sessions going long after you meant to stop. Elemental damage adds another layer, since fire burns flesh, corrosive eats armor and shock strips shields, so building a loadout becomes a puzzle you keep solving.
The Vita version, ported by Iron Galaxy, goes well beyond the base campaign. Gaige the Mechromancer and Krieg the Psycho join the roster as playable characters, and the Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty and Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage story add-ons are part of the game, along with the level-cap increases that followed them. Some functions use the front and rear touch surfaces, the controls can be remapped, and co-op was scaled to two players rather than the home consoles' four.
The writing is why people still talk about this one. Anthony Burch's script turns Handsome Jack into one of gaming's great villains, a smug, funny, monstrous corporate tyrant, and the supporting cast of Tiny Tina, Mr. Torgue, Lilith and the returning heroes of the first game keeps the jokes and surprises coming. On the Vita it remains one of the most ambitious ports the handheld ever received, a full-size loot shooter you can carry in a jacket pocket.
