Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The manual shows some wear. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Bonk solves every problem with his forehead. The bald, big-headed caveboy began life in Japan as PC Genjin, a mascot whose name punned on NEC's PC Engine, so seeing him on Nintendo's console is one of the stranger crossovers of the early 1990s. Hudson Soft brought him to the Famicom as FC Genjin and to the NES as Bonk's Adventure, giving players who never owned a TurboGrafx-16 a chance to meet the rival console's star.

The heart of the game is the bonk itself. Bonk headbutts dinosaurs and prehistoric oddballs out of his way, knocking them back with a satisfying thud. Meat is the series' signature power-up: a chunk of it makes him stronger, and a big enough helping makes him briefly invulnerable, which turns a careful platformer into a joyful rampage for a few seconds at a time. Fruit and vegetables top up his health, so every stage rewards poking into corners for snacks.

The story is pure Saturday-morning cartoon. The villainous King Drool, a hulking green tyrannosaur, has kidnapped Princess Za, a little pink plesiosaur whose crown holds special power, and it's up to Bonk to bonk his way through Drool's forces to get her back. The bright, expressive art and goofy enemy designs carry the same sense of humor that made the original one of the TurboGrafx-16's most memorable games, which Electronic Gaming Monthly later ranked among its 100 best games of all time.

The direct sequels, Bonk's Revenge and Bonk 3, stayed on NEC's hardware and the Game Boy got its own separate adventures, so this is the Bonk adventure NES owners got on their own console. It's a late, colorful oddity in the NES library and a fun bridge between two rival platforms of the era.
