Item Description

Two round-faced burglars, a building full of loot and a guard who has just turned the corner: Bonanza Bros. turns the heist into a cartoon. Robo and Mobo slip through heavily guarded buildings, grabbing every glittering target on their list before making their getaway. Sega built it as an arcade game in 1990 and brought it to the Genesis soon after, and it plays like nothing else in the console's early library.

The clever part is the split screen. Even in a single-player game the display is divided in two, so a second player can take over the other brother and run their own half of the job. Each brother moves between floors and rooms, stunning guards with a pop gun or flattening them behind a swinging door, and the clock is always ticking until the brothers reach the roof, where a blimp waits to carry off the haul. Planning a route through the building is half the fun. Get spotted and the guards come running, and a clean plan dissolves into slapstick chaos.

The look is part of the appeal. Bonanza Bros. uses flat, clean shapes and bright colors that give everything the feel of an early computer-rendered cartoon, a style that still stands out among its 16-bit peers, and the playful, light-footed rhythm makes even a botched run funny.

It is a stealth game built for laughs and a cooperative heist game from years before either idea was fashionable, which makes it a terrific rediscovery today. As a two-player pick for a couch-friendly Genesis shelf, few cartridges are as instantly fun to hand to a friend.
