Item Description

What happens when Bomberman's frantic arena battles meet a Zelda-style quest and a Pokémon-style creature hunt? Bomberman Tournament, known in Japan as Bomberman Story, answers that question with surprising ambition. Hudson Soft released it in the Game Boy Advance's first summer, and it showed that the series could be much more than a party game on a handheld.

The Quest mode sends Bomberman to the planet Phantarion after an attack by the villainous Brain Bomber, with Doc and Max coordinating the mission. It is a proper adventure: eight cities, five puzzle-filled dungeons and six major bosses, with new gadgets to find and allies to meet along the way. The twist is the Karabons, 25 collectible creatures that offer advice and boost Bomberman's abilities. You find them through chance encounters or by gene-splicing two lesser breeds into something stronger, and rival trainers challenge you to turn-based Karabon battles where stats and planned attack strategies decide the winner. GameSpot pegged the campaign at around 20 hours.

Battle mode is the classic Bomberman you remember, and on the GBA it is as tense and hilarious as ever. Up to four players can link up, drop time bombs to trap each other and race for power-ups that extend blast range, raise bomb capacity, increase speed or scramble your controls at the worst possible moment. Eight arenas each add their own twist, from land mines to a high-power stadium, and the game supports both multi-cartridge and single-cartridge linking, so a friend without their own copy can still join in.

Reviewers were impressed. GameSpot scored it 8.6 and called it the best Bomberman to reach North America since Saturn Bomberman. For Game Boy Advance collectors, it is a standout early title that blends two very different games into one cartridge: an adventure to sink a long weekend into, and a multiplayer brawler that comes out every time friends bring a link cable.
