Picture the chaos of a kart racer with real licensed cars, neon-lit city streets and twenty drivers jostling for the same racing line, and you have Blur. Bizarre Creations, the British studio behind Metropolis Street Racer and Project Gotham Racing, took its expertise with realistic street racing and electrified it, filling every pack with glowing power-ups that turn each lap into a scramble. The garage runs from muscle cars and tuned imports to off-road trucks, and the handling keeps enough weight and drift to reward real racing skill between the explosions.
The power-up set is small but brilliantly balanced. Shunt fires a homing red orb at the car ahead, Bolt sends a quick volley of shots, Barge blasts away everyone around you, Shock drops electric domes in front of the leaders, and Mine, Nitro, Shield and Repair round out the arsenal. Many weapons can be fired backward as well as forward, and a well-timed Mine or Shield can stop an incoming Shunt, so skilled players are constantly reading the race behind them as much as the road ahead.
The single-player career is built around earning Fans through stylish driving and completing fan demands, and each group of events builds toward a one-on-one showdown with a rival boss driver. Tracks draw on real places such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Barcelona and the streets of Hackney in London, and four-player split-screen makes it a superb couch racer. Blur was also built around big online lobbies, which were a major draw at launch.
Released in the same month as Split/Second, Blur struggled to find its audience despite strong reviews, and it turned out to be Bizarre Creations' final racing game before the studio closed in 2011. That history has earned it a cult following among racing fans, many of whom argue that nothing since has blended real-car handling and kart-style combat quite as well.
Made by the masters behind Project Gotham Racing and Metropolis Street Racer, Blur is a racing project by Bizarre Creations that aims to take arcade-style action and realistic driving physics to a whole new level. The game drops players into heart-pumping, electrified racing action with 20 cars on a track all targeting the finish line and battling each other as they trade paint and collect intense power-ups, including the ability to blast other cars out of the way with huge bursts of energy, boost their speed, and more. While controlling photo-realistic cars, gamers can use offensive and defensive attacks as they battle for the lead and careen through real-world track locations ranging from L.A. and San Francisco to the streets of Hackney, UK and the treacherous roads of Barcelona, Spain.
