Item Description

When the NFL signed its exclusive license with Electronic Arts, Midway lost the right to put real teams in NFL Blitz. Its answer was to stop playing nice. Blitz: The League took the series' eight-on-eight, 30-yard-first-down arcade football into a fictional league with no referees, no penalties and no corporate image to protect, and it became the first Blitz game to carry an M rating for its violence, language and drug content.

On the field, everything runs through the Clash meter. Gaining yards, stuffing runs behind the line and forcing turnovers charge it, and spending it powers dirty hits, vicious stiff-arms and evasive moves that drain an opponent's stamina and can knock players out of the game. Injuries play out in x-ray cutaways of snapping bones and torn ligaments, and stringing together enough Clash plays unlocks Unleash moves that are close to unstoppable. Off the field, winnings buy equipment, facility upgrades and performance enhancers, and injured stars can be treated properly or “juiced” back onto the field at the risk of something far worse.

The campaign is the real surprise. You build a franchise from scratch, choosing its name, uniforms and logo, then hire a coach, coordinators, a team doctor and captains. After a last-play loss to the New York Nightmare and their brutal captain Quentin Sands, your club is dumped into Division 3 and has to claw its way back toward a title shot. Former writers from ESPN's Playmakers helped script the story, and it plays like a sports drama with the gloves off: a scheming owner chasing a stadium deal, a veteran sinking into gambling debt, a rookie chasing a cheerleader. Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor voices Sands and served as the game's cover athlete and spokesman.

Critics gave the Xbox version generally favorable reviews, though plenty grumbled about computer opponents who turn superhuman late in close games. With split-screen play for two, it's at its best with a friend on the couch trading cheap shots, and it captures the exact moment Midway decided that losing the NFL meant it could finally make the football game it wanted.

About the game

Blitz: The League is an American football game by Midway as an unlicensed extension of their NFL Blitz series. Released after the NFL signed an exclusive licensing deal with Electronic Arts, it was released in October 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This game is the first in the Blitz series to receive an "M" rating by the ESRB due to the graphic violence, explicit language, and drug use depicted. Lawrence Taylor, who provides voice acting for the game, serves as its official spokesman. In 2006, a second version of the game was released on the Xbox 360 in October. In December 2006, a portable version was released on the PlayStation Portable (under the title Blitz: Overtime). These versions included the voicework and likeness of former pro linebacker Bill Romanowski. The game was originally intended to be a Wii launch title, but the Wii-version was delayed and eventually canceled. On January 22, 2007, the game was refused classificatio by the Office of Film and Literature Classification in Australia, effectively banning the game there. The game was banned as the use of drugs was related to incentives and rewards.
